WEST POTOMAC MARCH MADNESS CONCERT - 3/24

The West Potomac High School bands will present their March Madness concert on Wednesday, March 24 at 7:30 pm in Springbank Auditorium. This annual concert features various marches, and is always a very lively and enjoyable event featuring guest conductors and musicians from the community. During the concert our band director, Mr. Steve Rice, conducts a live auction,  with the winner given the opportunity to conduct the band as they perform "Stars and Stripes Forever."

All proceeds from the  live auction go to the Christopher J. Cutting Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund was established by Christopher Cutting's parents on August 12, 1977 to commemorate Christopher’s love for band music. Christopher Cutting was born November 8, 1957 and died in a tragic accident on July 31, 1977. He was a member of the Fort Hunt High School Band and served as drum major in 1976. This fund is a perpetual memorial to Christopher and provides financial support whereby other serious music students may have the opportunity to receive private instruction that is so critical to musical excellence.

Please join us on March 24 for a very enjoyable evening!  Concert admission is free.

Little Hunting Creek Cleanup - Saturday April 10, 2010

Now that all that snow has finally melted--it's time to start planning
for this year's Little Hunting Creek cleanup on the (hopefully) balmy
warm spring day of April 10.

Please join us at any of the following trash cleanup sites on Saturday,
April 10:

--Little Hunting Creek pump station (Londonderry and Stockton Parkway,
8600 Stockton Parkway).  Trash pickup from 9 to noon.  Contact:  Celia
Boertlein, cboertlein@aol.com, 703-360-3735.

--The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust site (corner of Londonderry
and Stockton Parkway, 8610 Stockton Parkway). We'll be picking up trash
and cutting and pulling English ivy and other invasive exotic vines from
9 a.m. to noon.  Bring loppers and/or weedwhacker.  (Roadside trimming
for those esp. allergic to poison ivy.)  Contact:  Betsy Martin,
betsy@folhc.org, 703-360-0691.

--8707 Stockton Parkway, for volunteers who want to take their own kayak
or canoe out to pick up trash--and enjoy a paddle with the ospreys and
herons.  High tide will be at 6:13 p.m., so plan to launch after 1:30
until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.  Contact:  Paul Siegel,
paulnbets@zzapp.org, 703-346-9141.   Bring your lifejackets.

--Kirk Park,  between  Sherwood Hall and Collingwood (7903 Candlewood).
Trash pickup 9 to noon.  Contact:  Brian Walsh, walshb@fccps.org,
703-660-9765.

--Stratford-on-the-Potomac, at 9000 Captain's Row.  Trash pickup 9 to
noon.  Contact:  Karl Egloff, karlegloff@yahoo.com, 202-203-0434.

If you'd like to clean up a new site (and would like a supply of bags
and gloves or help arranging trash pickup), give me a call and we'll
work it out.

Check http://www.friendsoflittlehuntingcreek.org/ for updates.  Gloves
and sturdy trash bags will be provided.  Wear long sleeves and long
pants and boots--some sites are muddy, and there may be poison ivy.

Community service credits are available.

Y'all come!  Thanks for your past and future support, as always.

Betsy Martin (703-360-0691)
