The Census is currently underway.  Census takers will be in Fairfax beginning mid-March.

FYI:

1) Anyone claiming to be a census worker WILL HAVE VALID PHOTO ID.
2) Anyone from the US Census will ONLY ASK the SAME 10 QUESTIONS that appear on the
official Census form that you should have received previously by mail.
3) The Census will NOT ask for Social Security info, bank info, passwords.  When it doubt,
the answer is NO.
4) The Census will not ask for money, a voluntary donation, and will not promote any cause
or political view.
5) The Census is NOT being conducted by email nor online, nor will there be online/email
follow-up.
6) Even an official Census worker does not need to enter your home.

It is important to note that a census worker will visit your home only if you fail to mail
back the official Census form.  The official form arrives by US Mail and is returned by US
Mail.  You will also be saving taxpayer (that's you) money (that's yours) by simply
mailing the form back promptly.  The Census folks need to get a response from every
address.  It is MUCH cheaper to do it by mail than by sending a worker to your door to
bother you with questions.  (Of course, if they did it by phone they could only call
during dinner.)

SO - mail back the form promptly. And stay vigilante.

Waste Collection Procedures, Disposal of Damaged Tree and Bush Debris - posted 3/1/10

Hello All,

I have talked to the Waste Management folks at the County and while the whole county has a problem with disposing of all the damaged tree and bush debris, they are adhering to their call in procedures. However, if someone on a block or area calls in for a pickup, they will look for more waste on the street edge. They simply want to be able to log it all even though they will not be counting the pickups against the yearly total allowed or will give extra credit at years end. Anyway, please pass the word as far as you can to all you know to call in their piles over then next few weeks as they will not hold to the every other week protocol.

Many folk may see their debris taken away today if the trucks are coming into sight of their pile, so please also ask folks to keep all other neighbors posted as to who is calling in the pickup, etc. Please remind everyone that the number to call for pickup at the automated request line is: 703-802-3322. The menu will also let you talk to a real person if you prefer just wait for the right instruction.

Good luck and happy hauling. If we work together, we just might get all this stuff out of the neighborhood by ‘spring planting’ time!

Notice Regarding the Referendum Printed in the October 2009 Newsletter

SLCA members should disregard the Referendum concerning proposed amendments to the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan printed in the October 2009 Newsletter.  One of the nominations has been changed and the Executive Board, if necessary, will be revising and reissuing a new referendum in the coming months.

MVCCA Area Plan Review 2009-2010 Comprehensive Plan Nomination  - Little Hunting Creek Pumping Station (updated 9/11/09)

A nomination has been made to the MVCCA regarding the future of the Little Hunting Creek Pumping Station as part of the MVCCA's 2009-2010 Area Plan Review.  The SLCA EC did not author this nomination.

Due to overwhelming feedback from residents on the issue of this nomination the SLCA EC has revised its original opinion on this issue posted to this Web site on 9/4/09 and will now suggest the a friendly amendment to the Little Hunting Creek Pumping Station Nomination at the MVCCA Council meeting on September 10, 2009.  The statement from our President to be read at the meeting is as follows:

"I would like to add a friendly amendment to the nomination.  I would ask that you vote yes for this nomination with the stipulation that 30 days after the Stratford Landing Citizen's Association October 2009 Annual Meeting we can give you our support for this nomination or we can give you our request to pull this nomination.  In the case we ask you to pull the nomination,  you agree to  respect our community's wishes, since we are the community that will be impacted immediately by this nomination, and pull the nomination at such time."

If the MVCCA accepts this friendly amendment our representative will vote in favor of the proposed nomination at the MVCCA Council meeting on September 10, 2009.  If the MVCCA does not accept the friendly amendment then we will vote no.

The friendly amendment was not accepted at the MVCCA Council meeting on September 10, 2009.  The friendly amendment was accepted by the MVCCA co-chairs, but was challenged by a number of representatives from other citizen's associations.  This opposition meant the amendment could not be accepted as a friendly amendment.  A vote was taken on the nomination and it was passed.  The SLCA representative voted against the nomination.

This amendment is not asking if we are in favor of a park or public access. This nomination is stating if the county should decide it no longer needs the land surrounding the pumping station it will kept at open space. Currently, if the county should decide it no longer needs the land it can be developed for homes.

We will have information about this nomination if it passes in our October Newsletter. If the nomination should pass, the rules committee will meet and draft a poll or referendum, post the information on our Web site and newsletter. The community will have an opportunity to vote or submit their opinions at our Annual Meeting to be held in October (date to be determined).

The nomination as currently written:
-----------------------------
Vision:  Preserve Open Space in Little Hunting Creek Treatment Plant Site

Nomination Subject:  Little Hunting Creek Treatment Plant
Location:   8600 Stockton Parkway (Stockton and Londonderry)

Vision Overview:
·        Revise Plan language to reflect conversion of facility from sewage treatment plant to pumping station and its continuing use by Fairfax County for that purpose.
·        Delete references to future development and density.
This 9.6 acre site lies mostly in the RPA, on the eastern shore of the main stem of Little Hunting Creek. It includes freshwater tidal wetlands.

Portions not in use by DPWES should be preserved as open space.  Consideration should be given to consolidating portions of this 9.6 acre parcel with the adjacent 1.8 acre parcel 102-3((02))A owned by the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, which is almost entirely freshwater tidal wetlands.

Conditions:
·        Assure preservation as open space of all portions of tract not used by DPWES.
-----------------------------
This nomination does not address public access or a park, which is what our referendum 5 years ago addressed and the community voted on.  We will vote on this nomination at our Annual Meeting in October (date to be determined).  We believe this is the fairest way to allow our community to address this issue of this nomination.

This is a nomination to change the language in the comprehensive plan to reflect that should the county decide not to use the land around the pumping station it will not be developed and will continue to be open space.

This is not a discussion about the land around the pumping station becoming a park or allowing public access.

For more information of the this process and the public participation opportunities available you may visit the
MVCCA Web site or the Fairfax County Web site.

The Stratford Woman's Club

“The Stratford Woman’s Club, founded in 1972 by local lady residents, has 45 members active in the community and surrounds.  Our task is to promote the civic, cultural, social, educational and physical environment of the community.  It is non-political and non-partisan.  Our members collect food and clothing for the homeless, provide a Christmas Breakfast at the Mental Health Centre for fifty (50) attendees, with each one receiving a gift-wrapped new warm shirt.  We donate to the libraries of 5 local schools each year, as well as supporting other needy causes.  We raise our funds through raffles, bean soup mix sales, and many other activities. In the past we have donated a total of $32,000 to Mt. Vernon Hospital since 1972, when participating in their annual bazaar, which is now defunct.  We also donated $400 to Carl Sandburg school towards a new keyboard, and $400 each to our two High Schools, this amount representing a legacy f;rom our former president, Nancy Condon. We also enjoy an annual day bus trip to an interesting part of N. Virginia, and have two active bridge groups.  We meet once a month at the Presbyterian Church, Ft. Hunt Rd. SWC would be delighted to welcome new members who share our worthy goals..  Call Membership Chairman MaryLou Hoffman at 703-360-7267 for more info.”
